Sound Division deliver a Spoony Classic
Sound Division Group’s events division has provided sound reinforcement for many A-list celebrity social functions over the years — frequently in the world of sport, involving Radio One DJ Spoony.
Through his company Silverspoon Entertainment, the DJ (who is also a Radio Five Live presenter), again brought the worldss of professional football and golfing together for the annual Spoony Classic pro celebrity golf day, which took place at the picturesque Stoke Park course near Slough, followed by a fundraising dinner.
The highlight was a live set from Craig David, who personalised his 45-minute performance by tailoring the song lyrics to suit the occasion, before Spoony himself finished the night off playing hip hop hits and 80’s soul.
Sound Division Group know the Spoony DJ spec inside out, and under the project management of John Sullivan, they purpose built a mobile rig based around two Pioneer CDJ-1000 Mk2’s and DJM800 mixer, with a JBL Eon 10 powered monitor providing his reference sound.
This was dressed up in a fabulous black perspex surround, as Sound Division’s director of operations, Chris Baxter explained. “The console was built on Alideck 6ft x 2ft deck stand, raised 4ft high with special padding; the black perspex provided a sophisticated and eyecatching finish.”
Additional PA used for the live set consisted of two L’Acoustics SP218 subs, groundstacked each side with four L’Acoustics Arcs mid highs, processed through an XTA DP226 management system.
At the front-of-house position was the new Yamaha M7CL digital mixing console and Avalon 737 tube preamp/compression, while Craig David used L’Acoustics 115FM floor monitors and Shure microphones. The Yamaha desk was operated by freelance engineer Des Jabir, a long-term associate of Sound Division, while Savoir Faire, suppliers of the marquee, also provided the stage lighting.
Added Chris Baxter, “It is always a pleasure to work with Spoony and his team at Silverspoon Entertainment. The Sound Division crew, under technical manager John Sullivan, ensured that Craig David’s acoustic set sounded superb through the L’Acoustics PA.”
Hosted and organised entirely by Spoony, the event — designed to help underprivileged children from inner cities to play golf — was a huge success, raising £75,000 from the auction that took place during the dinner.
Those on the guest list who were asked to dig deep, included Ian Wright, Gianluca Vialli, Jamie and Louise Redknapp, Vernon Kay and Tess Daly, Willie Thorn, Matt Dawson, Phil Babb, Lee Dixon, Matt Le Tissier, Keiron Dyer, Artful Dodger … and many professional golfers.
